Does your house needs remodeling?

Let’s face it: it’s tempting to think about remodeling your home anytime you find some part of it isn’t quite what you want, and could be with just a few small adjustments. But that doesn’t always mean it’s really truly time to remodel. Sometimes a remodeling job would actually be much larger than it looks and not worth the time, hassle or money investment. Sometimes a redecorating job will do enough, so there’s no point going to the trouble of remodeling.

Needing more space

If your household is growing or you’ve started working from home (or spending more time at home for any reason), a small, cozy home can start to feel cramped. If your home simply is too small, then you do need to remodel it. But consider a few alternative possibility first:

  • Is your home filled with junk and more furniture than you need? If it’s not actually the size of the rooms that’s a problem, consider getting rid of some stuff or at least putting it in storage. That may relieve the cramped feeling without any need for remodeling.
  • Do you have space that’s going to waste? Say, a breakfast nook you never use. Would turning it into a small office help? If so, you may not need to build any walls – just a little redecorating might do the trick.

If you decide you need to add onto your home, take a look at other homes in the neighborhood to get an idea what sort of additions would add to the value of your home by making it stand out from the competition.

Power efficiency

Another good reason to remodel your home is to gain better power efficiency. Upgrading windows can reduce your power bills considerably. Investing in newer Energy Star appliances for kitchen and laundry can also save you money over time, as well as making your life easier, since many of these appliances (but not all, so do your homework) work more quickly, quietly or well than earlier versions.

Crumbling cabinetry

One of the favorite spots to remodel is kitchen cabinets. Over time, even with the best care, cabinets break down and look worn. Replacing them is one option, and if you need more storage space it’s probably the best. But if your storage is adequate and it’s just the cabinets themselves, a simple refacing may be quicker, easier and less expensive than replacing the cabinets.

New flooring

One of the best ways to improve a home dramatically is with new flooring. Old carpet looks worn and accumulates odors. Replacing it with new carpeting or flooring can dramatically improve the look of your home and the enjoyment your family has in it.

Time, hassle and expense

Remember that remodeling involves:

  • Displacing your household members from certain areas of the house
  • Lots of noise
  • Dust and obnoxious smells

And sometimes remodeling jobs take longer than expected. Choose a time that will keep the inconvenience to a minimum.
