Keeping your cool during a home remodeling
Remodeling a home can be an exceedingly frustrating experience. While some inconvenience is unavoidable, there are ways to limit the frustration you’re likely to experience during the process. The first step is to recognize what causes the frustration: having too many decisions to make, and concerns that the contractors involved are not doing what they promised, or are taking too long, or are trying to take financial advantage of you. By minimizing these concerns up front, you can minimize the frustration.
Get a general
One of the best investments you can make in a home remodeling project is to hire a general contractor who specializes in remodeling jobs. The general contractor will do much of the work himself, then hire subcontractors to do what he is not licensed or experienced enough to do himself. You will only deal with him financially. He will take care of making sure the work is done when and how it should be. He can look at the subcontractors’ work and know if it’s the quality you’re paying for or not.
Do your homework in choosing your general contractor
But in order to trust your general contractor, you’ll need to feel sure he’s good at what he does. Get recommendations from people you know who have had remodels. Or, if that’s not feasible, as the contractors you interview for referrals. If possible, visit the homes he’s worked on and take a look at the job he did.
Let the contractor handle it
Now it’s time to relax and let the contractor handle all the frustration for you. Do not attempt to micromanage the job. The contractor will go over your options and make sure he understands everything he needs to before the job starts. Relax and let him do his work. There will be enough stress during the job, as unexpected minor problems arise (such as wall damage behind a cabinet that wasn’t visible until the cabinet was removed).
This too shall pass
Keep in mind that the remodeling job will be over eventually. Go into the job expecting inconvenience, and be prepared for it. This attitude will make it seem less inconvenient than expected, and that will make it easier to tolerate what you have to put up with until it’s done.
