Making Small Rooms Look Bigger

Small apartments and houses can deeply frustrate your inner interior designer. It’s hard to fit in even a minimal amount of stuff without making them look cluttered. But the truth is, small rooms can be made to look bigger, and also very elegant. It’s just a matter of knowing how it’s done.

Creating a focal point

When you walk into a room and immediately see a big, inviting sofa, you don’t immediately notice how small the room surrounding it is. Create focal points in small rooms to distract from the size of the room itself. Conversation circles, fireplaces, entertainment centers, beds, and dining tables are some examples of focal points that work.

Another trick is to paint an accent wall. That’s one wall of a room painted darker than all the others. You should choose one of the narrower walls for this accent color. Hang some artwork on that wall and install a low-hanging light fixture to light the artwork. Now you’ve got a very impressive focal point.

Color and size

Light makes a room seem larger. Keep walls in small rooms light in color. Use paint that’s a tiny bit reflective but still a flat interior type paint.

Mirrors

Many people recommend mirrored walls or closet doors to make a room look larger, but here’s an important detail: this only really works if the mirror is opposite a window. Then it reflects the light and makes the room seem not only larger but brighter. Mirrors alone don’t really fool the eye that much.
