Portable table you can use while sitting on a sofa

Sometimes you need a surface, but don’t have room for a table. Or you want a moving surface that’s like a breakfast tray, except it doesn’t try to wedge itself lopsided down between the cushions of the couch. They’re making these portable tables with legs that slide under a couch or chair. The Table-Mate (pictured here) is one example.

A friend of mine has one of these, and they really are sturdy. I had no sense as I was testing it out that I might easily knock it over, or that it might tip from an unbalanced load on the top. They also move easily on carpet and slide into very tight spaces, so you don’t have to worry about it being difficult to move around.

What all could you use one of these portable tables for?

  1. Holding a laptop and mouse so you can compute comfortably (and with much better ergonomics than holding it on your lap).
  2. Eating meals at the couch. Yes, it’ll handle a beverage.
  3. Writing. It’s a nice smooth stable surface, just like a desk, except it doesn’t take up all that room.
  4. Crafting. This is perfect for crafters who need a small table. I’m not sure it could handle a sewing machine, but most anything else would be fine.
  5. Artwork. Great for drawing or painting.
  6. Feed guests. Running out of table space for a big bunch of visitors? Someone can pull a chair up near the dining table and eat on this portable table, and still be included with all the other guests.

You can also use these in most beds (depends on the height). With most models, you can adjust the height and the tabletop angle, and they fold down neatly when you want them completely out of the way.
