What you can do with inexpensive steel bookshelves
Steel shelving has been around for ages because it’s cheap, sturdy and built to last. These shelves are designed to hold items other than books. The problem is, they’re kind of ugly. There’s no known home decor style that they belong with. So what can you do with them?
In the garage, where they’re out of site, put plastic bins into a shelf like this and store tools, nuts and bolts, or junk. Label the bins, and suddenly everything looks nice and orderly, even if it’s really not on the inside. This actually looks pretty fabulous, for a garage.
Hidden away. If you’ve got an oddball closet – like one of those slanted ones under a staircase, you can stick a cheap steel shelf in there and store anything you want – in a similar fashion to the garage method I described above.
In plain sight. These shelves can actually look good in your living room, if you’ve got a modern style and you fill them up with enough stuff to distract people from the shelves themselves. But if that doesn’t work for you, dress it up before using it alongside the rest of your decor! Drape it with fabric. Cover the shelves with fabric and wrap the posts, too. Wrap ribbon around the steel poles (or weave it through the holes). Paint it the same color as the wall it’s going to stand in front of.
In the crafting room. These things are perfect for holding crafting supplies. You can dress them up as I described for use in the living room, and then add plastic bins full of your supplies (like we talked about for garages). It keeps everything organized and it looks wonderful.
